Jim Duquette as he left Canada in 2004 to serve in the Golan Heights. &#x3C;br&#x3E;There were regular e-mails from his wife Anne, updating him with pictures and stories, but Duquette had no idea what it was like to be a father. &#x3C;br&#x3E;When he returned to his Edmonton home more than a year later, he took comfort in an anticipated 37 weeks of parental leave to get to know his young son, to begin really being a father. &#x3C;/font&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;font size=&#x22;3&#x22;&#x3E;Not so, according to the Employment Insurance Act, which stipulates the leave must be taken within 52 weeks following a birth or adoption. &#x3C;br&#x3E;He was away 54 weeks. &#x3C;br&#x3E;Those are the rules. Darren James Fitzpatrick died at the University of Alberta Hospital Saturday after succumbing to wounds he received from a roadside bomb that detonated while he was on patrol in Afghanistan on March 6.&#x3C;/font&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;font size=&#x22;3&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/font&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;font size=&#x22;3&#x22;&#x3E;The 21-year-old infantryman from Prince George, B.C., was critically wounded during a joint Canadian-Afghan mission 25 kilometres west of Kandahar City.&#x3C;/font&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;font size=&#x22;3&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;/font&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E; &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;font size=&#x22;3&#x22;&#x3E;Fitzpatrick was treated at the multinational hospital at Kandahar Airfield and was then airlifted to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.
